Cooperative School of Missions on the Way

The 2009 School of Christian Mission is set for July 23-25 at Lon Morris College. You won't want to miss this educational and inspirational event.

There are changes this year so read the informational flyer carefully. If you didn't receive one in the mail check with you local UMW members and share one that was received. You minister also recieved a flyer. It can also be found on line at www.gbgm-umc.org/texasconfumw on the School of Mission page.

This year you have the choice of selecting one of three studies: Faith and Food (Spiritual Growth), Giving our Hearts Away: Native American Survival (Social Issue); or The Beauty and Courage of Sudan (Geographical Study). Everyone will not be taking the Spiritual Growth Study as in the past. That study will be taught in small group format as the other studies have historically been. You have a choice of one 8 hour study and one 4 hour study plus enrichment classes. One of the enrichment classes is a field trip to the Caddo Indian Mounds in Alto, Texas (south of Jacksonville). Notice that on the web site there is a sheet of information regarding this trip. One of the 4 hour classes is a Hands On opportunity. Lots of new ideas so read the flyer and registration form carefully.

Hope you all plan on a trip to Lon Morris this summer. Come join us and have a great learning event.
Leave any comments you have at the end of the entry. Let's share our thoughts together.

FLOOD BUCKETS NEEDED NOW!!!

Lee Thornton says:

We are going through flood buckets down here like snow on a hot Texas day. We need them badly. Anyone have any extras?

Update From Kathy Mann: (taken from the Partners in Mission Web Site)
Dear Friends,

Things have been running at 200 mph around here. I thought I should give you an update on the situation so you will have an idea of where we are. I hope all of you made it through the storm with minimal damage. Some of us didn’t. Vivian Pinard’s home is severely flooded and they are living with neighbors. Others have had some roof damage. If you need a team at your house, let me know!

Ike damage was very serious in our South and South East Districts. We have churches that are missing others with damage so bad that they will not be repaired. Sabine Pass doesn’t look like it did before except that the Parsonage we all worked on is still standing!! Galveston Island and all areas to the east and west along the coast do not look the same. From a map perspective, if you look at all the waterways leading from the Gulf you will find severe damage. The storm surge was like a tsunami in many respects as it marched in strong and deep, destroying neighborhoods in its path. So all along the waterfront to the top of the Bay, over to Anahuac and following the coast over to Sabine Pass the storm surge was tremendous. Once you get past the coastal area, then we see lots of wind damage with trees causing substantial damage to homes. Right now, as you can guess, we are mucking out homes from flood waters all along the coastal and water edge areas. Trees are being cut up and debris removal is happening everywhere else from Houston to Missouri City to Crosby and all points east.

Eddie Hilliard has been hired for the next 90 days to over see the Houston/Galveston (and surrounding area) of Ike Recovery. Alan Miller has been hired for 90 days to organize the clean up/construction sites. I am in charge of scheduling volunteers and housing them. Rita Recovery in Beaumont is now “Disaster Recovery” and they will continue working with their staff in the eastern portions of our Conference for Hurricane Ike.

Flood buckets are still needed as we “owe” Sager Brown UMCOR Depot 1000’s to help them resupply. We are still accepting buckets for our area and they disappear from the church parking lots as quickly as they are dropped off. So your churches and church groups can continue to put them together. If you have a team wanting to work in the recovery effort please contact the office. I will pass on your information to both area offices. There is still plenty of clean up to do. We are hoping rebuilding/repairs can begin after the first of the year.

Hurricane Ike Update

How can we help the recovery effort in our Conference?

Lee Thornton has sent us some ideas for mission opportunities.

(1) The loss of Christmas ornaments from Central UMC in Galveston offers a great opportunity for UMW local units to make white and silver handmade Christmas ornament(s). They had water in their church and one of the things that were soaked were a box or more of handmade Christmas ornaments which the minister's wife was trying to save. They were quickpoint squares of embroidery with pearls and yarn and a silver design in the center and Christmas balls of wrapped yarn and ribbon - all handmade and soaked and turning brown. I thought it would be a wonderful gesture if each UMW group might make one to replace the lost ornaments, and send them to the church with a little message. All of them were white and silver. Wouldn't it be great for UMW to replace their Christmas ornaments.

2.) Flood Buckets are still needed. There are several distribution centers.

3) Volunteers are needed at different distribution centers. Check out the Partners in mission website www.partnersinmission.org for additional info and places.

Pass this on to those interested and your UMW counterparts.

Leave us a comment and tell us what you and your group is doing.

Update On Folks

Bettye Feagan says she came through fine in Pasadena. But she is aware that nearby areas were not so lucky. She is keeping all of you in her prayers.

Beverly Deerhake has power restored and only lost a couple of trees so she feel fortunate.
Thebe Worden emailed from Arkansas that she hears her area will be without power for two weeks of so so she is unsure how long she'll be in Arkansas.
